I have been fascinated with all things sprung from the forest floor since I was a kid. I used to entertain myself by creating worlds in tree trunks and talking to flowers. As an adult, not much has changed. If my cup feels empty, it’s the forest that replenishes what I cannot on my own. After a rather rainy summer here in Northern New Mexico, I tried to spend as much time tinkering around in the woods with my Pentax k1000. On this day in particular, the fly agarics were really beaming and wanting to be seen. I was so captivated by all the fungi, that I dropped my phone while sliding down a hill to get to them. Hours later and many miles away, I finally realized that my pocket copy of “All that the Rain Promises and More” by David Aurora was not my (sadly) much needed device. After just having replaced my phone, admittedly I was really stressed and not sure where to even begin looking. As luck would have it, I found my friends Amanda & Earl hiking around with their dogs and they agreed to help me on this wild goose chase. After stopping at a couple locations I had wandered around off 518, we returned to the Amanita grove where I discovered it amongst the mushrooms. Long story short, I consider these fruiting bodies friends. They’ve shown me the way on multiple occasions and they're pretty magical to witness.
